The Darkness Below

By Rob MacDonald
2011
A gripping and exhilarating voyage into the silent darkness of the depths at the cutting edge of technical diving. Adventures from a lifetime of diving including first explorations of virgin shipwrecks lost for aeons.

A daring expedition into the heart of the feared Corryvreckan whirlpool, the third largest in the world, an open sea encounter with Orca killer whales and an agonizing attack of the bends keep the reader engrossed. The palpable gloom, despair and human tragedy of the wrecks is never far away - the cold and darkness of the depths almost resonating with the cries of those who have perished. The fear of entrapment inside a wreck is grippingly described and becomes almost claustrophobic to the reader unfamiliar with the perils of wreck penetration, when snagged nets sometimes billow unseen above the unwary diver.

Freedom of the Seas

The story of Hitler's aircraft carrier 'Graf Zeppelin'

In July 2006 the wreck of a warship was found lying deep in the Baltic Sea. The ship lay largely forgotten in post-war Europe, until her accidental discovery by a Polish survey vessel, the MV Santa Barbara. Following her discovery one of the authors of this book, Cdr. Adam Olejnik, in his role as commander of a team from the Polish Navy’s Department of Underwater Work Technology, would be extensively involved in surveying the wreck site – the underwater images reproduced within the pages of this book originating from this mission.

Complimented by more than 150 images and a comprehensive set of ship’s plans, Freedom of the Seas documents the ship’s construction and other key events in her life, including her discovery and subsequent survey.

Grand Scuttle (Scapa Flow)

At Scapa Flow in 1919, the German Admiral in charge of 74 of his countries warships ordered that the fleet be scuttled. The High Sees Fleet of the German Royal Navy was one of the most formidable ever built, yet 52 of the ships were deliberately sent to the bottom of the British Grand Fleet's principal anchorage at Orkney. The book reports that Admiral Ludwig von Reuter became the only man in history to sink his own navy on the strength of a misleading report in a four-day old British newspaper; the Royal Navy guessed his intention but could do nothing about it; the sinking produced the last casualties and the last prisoners of the war.

Into the Abyss - Diving to Adventure in the Liquid World

By R. Macdonald

To deliberately journey 10-20 miles offshore into hostile, powerful seas before diving down into those waters seeking untouched, virgin shipwrecks - often in the pitch blackness of deep water - seems incomprehensible to many people. For Rod Macdonald, however, it has been an all-consuming passion since he first started diving in 1982. Into the Abyss charts the dramatic highs and lows of his diving career - packed full of incident, drama and excitement and has taken him to all of the great shipwreck sites of the world. From the sunken Japanese Fleet at the bottom of Truk Lagoon and Palau in the Pacific to diving into the third largest whirlpool in the world - the Corryvreckan Whirlpool off the west coast of Scotland - Macdonald's work has taken him on a spell-binding journey beneath the seas. Macdonald reflects upon the excitement, the successes and the near-tragic failures of his diving career so far.

Scapa Flow

By M. Brown and P. Meehan

Scapa Flow in the Orkneys would be the forbidding destination for many thousands of service personnel and civilians in both World Wars and the location of dramatic incidents such as the loss of the Hampshire with Kitchener on board in 1916, the scuttling of the German High Seas Fleet in 1919 and the sinking of the Royal Oak at anchor by U-boat U-47 at the beginning of the Second World War.

This book shares with us the "voices of men and women who served in two world wars in ... Scapa Flow. They are the voices of the lower deck, the barrack room, the lonely gunsite and they are as fresh and alive" now "as when we first heard them forty years ago".
